Course details

This course focuses on the AQA English Language A level and in particular the topic of language diversity and associated language discourses. We’ll start with how language varies across different levels - lexis, phonology, syntax and orthography, among them - before moving onto accent, dialect, ethnicity, sexuality and gender. We will make reference to the new EMC/University of Essex publication New Directions as part of the day. The course is designed to address the main areas for Paper 2, developing teachers’ subject knowledge, looking at new research and thinking, and exploring ways to make all this relevant to students. With language discourses, we will look at some of the main arguments around the topics and consider ways to encourage students to engage with these debates.

NB: This is a repeat course.
