This course focuses on the AQA English Language A Level and aspects of language diversity, change and discourses on Paper 2 (but will also be relevant for anyone teaching language variation, accents and dialects or aspects of language & identity for any A Level English Language specification). Drawing on work featured in the EMC New Directions download, and offering some new and updated studies, this course will give you a comprehensive overview of some of the most exciting work going on in sociolinguistics at the moment and a range of practical, classroom-based activities to help you link this work to the course.

We will cover:

  • Up-to-date research on accent attitudes, changing dialects and emerging varieties
  • Links to previous work in the field to help you embed these recent studies in a broader framework
  • Ideas to help students organise ideas and answer questions
  • Practical classroom activities for analysing media texts and language discourses
  • The chance to quiz the authors of the New Directions pack.

All attendees will receive a printed copy of the New Directions pack and an Even New(er)Directions update with 5 new studies and Q&As, as soon as it comes out.
