Duration - 2-4.30pm
This afternoon webinar is aimed at new and relatively new teachers of A Level English Language, especially, but not limited to, those who have attended one of Dan’s Starting to Teach courses. This conference features four speakers - two linguists and two teachers - offering ideas for how to move your own teaching on from the basics. It will help you develop more sophisticated analytical toolkits, deal with the complexities of language study and look at ways to start dealing with language change and language and identity.
In this session you will:
- Look at critical discourse analysis and ways to apply these tools to a range of texts
- Explore intersectional approaches to language variation and diversity
- Start looking at ways to approach contemporary language change
- Consider different activities and forms of assessment for students.
Christian Ilbury: Staying on Top of Contemporary Language Change
Rizz, slay, yaas, ate it up. One thing is sure: Language changes. But where did these words come from? Why do people use them? And why does language change? In this talk, I explore some contemporary patterns of language change. We consider current issues such as the role of social media in language change and claims of a new 'gen Z’ or ‘TikTok’ language.
Jessica Aiston: Introducing Critical Discourse Analysis
What is critical discourse analysis, what can we use it for and what are some of its main tools? This talk takes you beyond the basics of text analysis and into some of the most fruitful approaches for A level English Language.
Jacky Glancey: Intersectional Identities and Language
Studying language variation and diversity inevitably means exploring different aspects of identity, but how can you map a path through this on the course and how does it all fit together? A talk with some practical approaches to addressing different aspects of language diversity.
Dan Clayton: Media Debates and Discourses
Everyone has an opinion about language and sometimes these opinions become the source material for students to analyse. In this session we will look at ways to develop students' understanding of the big debates and how to start pulling them apart and responding to them, whether that's in analysis or writing opinion pieces themselves.
