Language change is an area of study that appears on all the A Level English Language specifications in some form or other, whether it is exploring the major forces behind linguistic change or the details of historical texts. In this webinar you will have a chance to hear directly from experts in this field.
In this session you will:
- Look at both the bigger picture of change and the linguistic details of older texts
- Hear about some of the major changes to English that are relevant to language study and the methods we can use to track those changes
- Explore historical texts in detail and consider how students can deal with texts like these
- Have a chance to discuss ideas in a Q&A session.
Talk 1
- Simon Horobin, University of Oxford: Historical change: an overview with key examples.
Talk 2
- Christine Wallis, University of Sheffield: Blending the old and new: using corpus approaches to help examine personal letters from 1770-1820.
Talk 3
- Robbie Love, Aston University: A corpus linguistics approach to contemporary language change.
This course will be recorded but attendees will not be audible or visible.
