If you are an A Level Media Studies teacher looking to get more out of your theory teaching, to engage your students with theory and support them in applying it in a more meaningful way in their exams, this course is for you.
We will recap some of the more challenging areas of the theoretical framework and suggest texts, resources and approaches that can be used to engage students in the ideas they will need to apply to their set products. We will suggest approaches that will help your students to reach a deeper understanding of the issues and debates covered in all the A Level specifications, as well as helping them to be able to apply their understanding to the media they consume outside the classroom.
Julian will be joined by EMC consultant Claire Pollard who will present some classroom approaches to theory.
NB: This is a repeat course.

Once you are on Webber Street, look out for the big gates and a sign saying CLPE. You’ll see EMC’s sign to the right of the entrance.

Claire Pollard
Claire Pollard is the advisory teacher for Media Studies at the English and Media Centre. She is the editor of MediaMagazine and the programme leader for the Goldsmiths Media and English PGCE working with trainees in schools all across London. Prior to working at the centre she taught English and Media Studies for 15 years in inner London schools, most of the time at Stepney All Saints in Tower Hamlets where she established Media as a new curriculum subject. She has been an examiner for GCSE English literature and a moderator for A Level Media Studies and has delivered CPD for OCR, the MEA and the BFI. Claire also contributed a chapter to Doing Text: Media After the Subject and she co-authored the second edition of Media Studies the Basics.
Julian McDougall
Julian McDougall is Professor of Media & Education at Bournemouth University. He runs a doctoral programme for media teachers and is the author of a range of Media Studies books and articles.- Bookings for this course will close at 8am (London, UK) on Thursday 12th June 2025 or when capacity is reached, whichever is the sooner.

Cancellations and amendments
- We require at least five working days’ notice of cancellation, otherwise your school will be invoiced for the full amount. However, if you are not able to attend and a colleague would like to take your place, this can be arranged at any time. (Please email [email protected] with the name and email address of the teacher.)
- We will indicate on the website when the course has reached viable numbers and will definitely run unless there are circumstances beyond our reasonable control. If you have booked your place before this threshold has been reached, we will email you to let you know. Before booking travel you may wish to wait until it has been confirmed on the website or by email that the course has reached viable numbers.
- If a course does have to be cancelled you will not be charged for the course and will receive a refund if you paid in advance. However, personal arrangements including travel, accommodation or hospitality relating to the course which have been arranged by you or your institution are at your own risk and not refundable by us.
- Our face-to-face courses are very interactive and cannot be live-streamed.
