Terms and Conditions for use of this website & EMC products

Please read these terms of use carefully before you start to use the site. By using our site, you indicate that you accept these terms of use and that you agree to abide by them. If you do not agree to these terms of use, please refrain from using our site.

1. The English and Media Centre

1.1. The English and Media Centre website is a site operated by the English and Media Centre; we are a non-profit making company limited by guarantee [Reg No. 2466244] and a charity registered in England and Wales under charity number [Registered charity number: 803031] Our registered office is THE ENGLISH AND MEDIA CENTRE, 44 WEBBER STREET, LONDON, SE1 8QW. VAT registration no: 473 8120 87
1.2. Access to our site is permitted on a temporary basis, and we reserve the right to withdraw or amend the service we provide on our site without notice (for example to update it). We will not be liable if for any reason our site is unavailable at any time or for any period.
1.3. Where our site contains links to other sites and resources provided by third parties, these links are provided for your information only. We have no control over the contents of those sites or resources, and accept no responsibility for them or for any loss or damage that may arise from your use of them.

2. Your details

2.1. When you register with the English and Media Centre website in order to buy publications, book courses and conferences and subscribe to magazines you will be required to register on the site. As part of this, you will need to provide a contact postal and email address and choose a username and password. You are responsible for all sessions and transactions taken under these details. You should keep your password safe and not disclose it to anyone. You should change it immediately if you feel it has been compromised.
2.2. By registering on the site and providing an email address you agree to receiving emails from the English and Media Centre.
2.3. You may close your account at any time. Please ensure you have downloaded all your purchases as you will no longer be able to access your downloads.

3. School accounts

3.1. Three types of UK school account are available: UK Trust/Academy Head Office (purchasing), UK Educator Admin (purchasing) and UK Educator Standard (non-purchasing).
3.2 By registering a UK Trust/Academy Head Office (purchasing) orUK Educator Admin (purchasing) account you confirm that you have the right to buy publications, book courses and subscribe to the magazines on behalf of the school.
3.3. It is the responsibility of the school to ensure that only those with permission to make purchases on behalf of a school register a UK Educator Admin account. Permissions can be revoked by any UK Educator Admin account holder by logging into their account.
3.4. It is the school's responsibility to delete the accounts of teachers/staff no longer at the school. This can be done by any UK Educator Admin account holder by logging into their account.

4. Postage

4.1 UK postage and packaging is free for print publications.
4.2 UK subscriptions to emagazine and MediaMagazine: there is no postage added.
4.3 Postage is added at checkout for overseas customers ordering physical publications.
4.4 Print magazine subscriptions are only available to schools in the UK.

5. Payment

5.1. The English and Media Centre website uses the secure payment system provided by Worldpay (RBS).
5.2. Credit and debit card details are not stored by the English and Media Centre or Worldpay.
5.3. Payment by invoice is available for UK educational institutions registered on the site. (Invoice is not available for short courses. Baskets including short non-invoiceable courses must be paid by debit or credit card.)
5.4. Individuals and educational institutions overseas are required to pay by debit card or credit card.
5.5. VAT invoices will be sent from [email protected]
5.6. VAT receipts for orders paid by credit or debit card will be sent from [email protected] within 7 days of the order being placed.
5.7 Order acknowledgements can be downloaded by signing in to your account. (UK Educational Admin, UK Individual Teache – Home Address Onlyr, UK Private Individual or Overseas)

6. Buying publications, booking courses and conferences, subscribing to magazines on the website

6.1. Prices of all publications, courses, conferences and magazines are subject to change at any time.
6.2. We may occasionally offer discount codes. Discount codes are issued for limited periods of time and may not be used retrospectively.
6.3. You will receive an automated email confirming your purchase, subscription or application for a course/conference place.
6.4. A receipt from Worldpay will also be sent by email for orders and bookings paid for by credit/debit card.
6.5. Confirmation of your application for a course or conference place will be made within 5 days (UK term-time only).
6.6. We aim to deliver print publications within 5 working days but please wait 10 days before querying non-delivery.
6.7. All downloadable publications will be delivered to your account immediately your order has been placed. In the case of purchases made by UK Trust/Academy Head Office (purchasing) account holders, delivery will be made to the web account of the school chosen at delivery.
6.8. Invoices will be sent from: The English and Media Centre 44, Webber Street, London SE1 8QW Invoices will be emailed from [email protected]
6.9. We are unable to invoice schools for short online courses. All courses must be booked and paid for online.
6.10. You bear all risk of loss for completing the download of download publications after purchase, once we have made such content available to you within your account, and for any loss of download content you have downloaded, including any loss due to a file corruption or a computer or hard drive crash. We encourage you to save downloadable publications promptly after purchase and to make back-up copies.

7. Cancellation and refund policies

7.1. Publications – physical
7.1.1  The English and Media Centre is unable to provide inspection copies.
7.1.2. The English and Media Centre website includes samples of all print and video materials, where applicable, allowing you to view the publication before purchase.
7.1.3. Refunds are offered within 14 days of purchase, provided goods are returned in perfect condition. Please contact [email protected] 

7.2 Publications – download
7.2.1. If you have a problem regarding a PDF (including those with digital assets) from the English and Media Centre, please contact us by email ([email protected]) within 48 hours.
7.2.2. If you have bought a download publication in error, please contact [email protected] Refunds for download publications are given at the discretion of the director.

7.3 Publications – technological developments/obsolescence
7.3.1 EMC is not liable for changes in technology (e.g. the withdrawal of a 3rd-party program, a school no longer possessing a DVD player which render previously purchases publications unusable. EMC will, however, seek to make the resource available in a different form. Please see individual publication pages for information on accessing digital versions of audio-visual resources.

7.4. Magazines
7.4.1. If you have subscribed to a magazine in error, please contact [email protected]
7.4.2. Please query non-delivery of magazines within 6 weeks of publication date.

7.5. Courses

7.5.1 Face to Face Courses (Full and half day)
7.5.1a We require at least five working days’ notice of cancellation, otherwise your school will be invoiced for the full amount. However, if you are not able to attend and a colleague would like to take your place, this can be arranged at any time. (Please email [email protected] with the name and email address of the teacher.)
7.5.1b You will receive a notification when the course has reached viable numbers and will definitely run unless there are circumstances beyond our reasonable control.
7.5.1c If a course does have to be cancelled you will not be charged for the course and will receive a refund if you paid in advance. However, personal arrangements including travel, accommodation or hospitality relating to the course which have been arranged by you or your institution are at your own risk and not refundable by us. You may wish to wait until you hear that the course has reached viable numbers before booking these.
7.5.1d Face to face courses are not live-streamed.

7.5.2 Online Courses (Full day)
7.5.2a We require at least five working days’ notice of cancellation, otherwise your school will be invoiced for the full amount. However, if you are not able to attend and a colleague would like to take your place, this can be arranged at any time. (Please email [email protected] with the name and email address of the teacher.)
7.5.2b If a course does have to be cancelled you will not be charged for the course and will receive a refund if you paid in advance. However, personal arrangements which have been arranged by you or your institution are at your own risk and not refundable by us. 
7.5.2c Our full day online courses run with limited numbers, include live discussion groups and are not recorded.

7.5.3 Afternoon and Twilight Webinars (60mins, 90mins, 120mins)
7.5.3a Afternoon and twilight webinars must be paid for by card at the time of booking.
7.5.3b The fee is non-refundable.
7.5.3c Webinars are recorded. Anyone who books a place on the course will be sent a link to access the recording of the webinar for 7 days following the course.

7.6. Conferences
7.6.1. Please see the Conference pages for details of cancellation dates.
7.6.2.  Please note: We will be unable to make refunds in the case of weather, transport difficulties or other circumstances beyond our control.

8. Copyrighted publications and licensing details

8.1. Print and download publications
8.1.1. Publications, including downloadable PDFs and hybrid publications (print publications with digital assets) are copyrighted publications. Where a publication states it is photocopiable (including download publications), permission is granted to the purchaser (individual teacher or department) to reproduce the materials for personal and educational use within the institution in which they are teaching. This includes adding PDFs and digital assets to the institutions VLE and intranet. Redistribution by any means including electronic, will constitute an infringement of copyright.
8.1.2. You must not modify the paper or digital copies of any materials you have downloaded, and you must not use any illustrations, photographs, video or audio sequences or any graphics separately from any accompanying text.
8.1.3. Our status (and that of any identified contributors) as the authors of material on our site must always be acknowledged.
8.1.4. You must not use any part of the materials on our site for commercial purposes without obtaining a licence to do so from us.
8.1.5. You must not upload or copy and paste material from EMC resources to any generative artificial intelligence app or website (e.g. Chat GTP) or AI large language model. This includes resources with a photocopiable licence.

8.2. Magazines
8.2.1. Access to the emagazine and MediaMagazine subscription websites is restricted to subscribing institutions (and individuals employed by or studying at the institution). Material from these sections may be downloaded and photocopied for use within the subscribing institution. Institution is understood to be the individual school, college or campus, whether or not part of a Trust, MAT or Group.
8.2.2. Individual schools, colleges, campuses within a Trust, MAT or Group require their own subscriptions to the magazines.
8.2.3. Magazine username and passwords must not be passed on to other institutions, including those within the same Trust, MAT or Group.
8.2.4 Magazine login details must not be published on the school website.
8.2.5. Magazine subscriptions, including access to the subscription websites, runs from 1st September to 31st August, regardless of when the subscription is taken out. Access to the subscription website will be cut off on 31st August unless the subscription has been renewed for the following academic year.
8.2.6. Print copies of the magazines are not photocopiable.
8.2.7. You must not upload or copy and paste material from emagazine or MediaMagazine or their related websites to any generative artificial intelligence app or website (e.g. Chat GTP) or AI large language model. 

9. Privacy

9.1. We process information about you in accordance with our Privacy Policy. By using our site, you consent to such processing and you warrant that all data provided by you is accurate.
