Autism is the most common type of special educational need for children with EHC plans, but research carried out in 2023 by the National Autistic Society suggests that only 26% of autistic pupils feel happy at school. The NAS report found that teacher confidence in supporting autistic children is high, but most had received very little training and ‘having teachers who don’t understand me’ was rated as the worst thing about school by over half of autistic learners.

What do English teachers need to know about autism in children and young people? What can teachers do to help autistic learners find their place in the English classroom and achieve their potential? How can they help autistic learners to enjoy the subject and engage as fully as possible with the curriculum? Autism education expert Jude Ragan, in conversation with EMC’s Kate Oliver, will share her expertise, set out some important principles and take questions from participants. Kate will then offer some practical strategies for you to take back to your classroom.

Online, via Zoom. Details of how to join will be sent before the session.
